2020 has been an insane year. It has been my best year yet and has been my most profitable year ever. Ending the year with over $150,000 in Revenue is completely mind-blowing. I’m sharing with you my biggest lessons learned on the journey to going from $0 to 6 figures with an online business in under a year (working from home). First, let me tell you the backstory on how I got here.
In 2017 I walked away from a six-figure job that I was deathly afraid to leave behind. I worked in digital marketing technology consulting for a global company (Accenture). I had the opportunity to work with multimillion-dollar and billion-dollar brands. While my experience at the company was an amazing one, there were also moments that showed me that I never wanted to work for anyone in the future if I didn’t have to. Full-time entrepreneurship isn’t for everybody, but I knew I was made for it.
When I left my corporate job, I had no real plans nor way to make consistent money. I just knew that if I bet on myself I could figure it out. To be honest, I thought it would be a bit easier for me than it was. I thought since I had so much experience doing marketing for major brands that I could be just as successful on my own. Little did I know, it would take 2 years for me to match my corporate job’s income with my business revenue.
I say that to say… it took time and experience for me to get here.
When I started consulting businesses on my own in 2018, I had begun making money, but I wasn’t wildly profitable. In 2020 I went from $0 to six-figures with an online business in under a year. It honestly still blows my mind that I am able to share the story with you. It’s crazy that I built a 6-Figure online business working from home.
So here’s my journey of going from $0 to six figures and under a year. Are you ready to learn my biggest lessons that I learned on the journey?
I learned that I could not get to six figures on my own. I needed the support of a business coach to really help look at my personal business from a bird’s-eye view. As an entrepreneur who is good at branding and strategy, sometimes it can be very difficult to look at your own business and figure out what next steps you should take. While I was amazing at doing that for other people, I was way too far in the weeds of my business to see what I needed to do to take my business to the next level.
Hiring a business coach was honestly one of the best decisions I made this year. It shifted my perspective, leveled up my business, and boosted my confidence in a way that I’m not sure it would have otherwise. Hiring a business coach does not mean that you are not smart or talented. It just means that you need someone else on the journey who is just as amazing and brilliant at what they do to help you build the best business you possibly can.
Yes, it’s possible to get to six-figures on your own without a dedicated team, but I promise it will be so much easier with the support of a team. Midway through 2020, I found myself overwhelmed and burnt out even though I was doing what I loved. But the problem was I was doing what I loved along with doing way too much that I didn’t NEED to be doing. I’m talking administrative tasks like answering emails, scheduling my Instagram content, sending client invoices, and so many other things that I honestly had no business doing.
As soon as I freed up my time, space, and energy to focus on what I was really really good at, that’s when everything shifted. That’s when I could truly enjoy the success that I had been able to have because I was not burnt out. Once you start generating the money that you desire to make, you can pay for the team to help you do more of the work that overwhelms you. That’s one of the best pieces of advice I can give you.
Your audience and your customers will notice and appreciate it. One of the biggest shifts in going from $0 to six figures in under a year, for me, was developing the confidence to show up knowing that my services and my expertise was extremely valuable. As soon as I started up showing up more confidently (and honestly going hard for my products and services), more and more people bought from me.
For example, last year I launched a Black Friday sale on a digital product and made little to no money. This Black Friday, I made $5,000 from a $27 product throughout the weekend. I attribute this to showing up consistently and confidently on social media. That allowed my audience to be confident in me and trust what I was bringing to the table. If you don’t think that was impressive, I turned around and offered a Christmas bundle for some courses I had already created and I sold it for $25. I made $7,500 from marketing this one digital product, and though I was $2,500 short of my $10,000 goal, I’m pretty impressed. I definitely plan to hit my goal of $10K in a week’s time with digital products alone next year, so you better get ready for my 30th birthday offers coming February 2021!
At first, I solely focused on high-ticket services like my 6-figure Marketing Maven Intensive which now starts at $10,500. However, I realized that offering digital products at a low price point was another area where I could help add value to people who did not have thousands of dollars to invest with me. The success of this was something I didn’t necessarily plan ahead, rather I created digital products to be quick wins for my audience so that they wouldn’t feel stuck and I could still provide them value.
I had no idea that I would be able to make thousands of dollars from a low priced product. That’s why I tested this out multiple times with my Black Friday offer and my Christmas offer. I wanted to make sure it worked and I was able to execute it effectively so that I can teach the same methods to my clients as well. I was intentional about the products that I created and made sure that they aligned with all of the services I offered. However, I was able to get to six-figures (and beyond) in under a year by diversifying my price points.
Honestly, I am sick and tired of people who are brilliant, amazing, phenomenal, talented, and have amazing expertise who undercharge for their services. So many experts struggle to get paid for their expertise. As soon as I decided to charge premium prices for my services, I was able to make so much more monthly through offering the same services I was previously offering (with a few tweaks to my offer). When I say you need to make sure that you are charging premium prices if you are offering a premium, luxury service, I mean it. I created my Charge Your Worth Mini-Course just for that! 2020 was the year that I stopped worrying about what everybody else was doing and focused on me. I gave my business and myself 100% of my effort, dedication, and attention. That part really shifted me into another level of success because I was focused on what God had for me and not comparing my journey to the journey of others.
You might think this one is a little bit odd in the mix as we’re talking about growing a six-figure business. However, at the beginning of 2020 I fasted and prayed for 21 days and God gave me so much clarity and vision about what he wanted from me in 2020. In March, when the COVID-19 pandemic swept the globe with shock, my response was one to rest in God’s peace and find time to fast and pray. I fasted most of April and May of 2020. I was really intentional about what I fed my spirit during quarantine.
I found that praying consistently really helped me have perspective. I was able to pray that God would lead me to the right coach, that God would send the right people to my team to help me build my vision, and I also was able to pray that God would send me the right clients who could afford my services. As a Christian entrepreneur, I don’t do anything without praying and fasting first most times.
So if you don’t do anything else in preparation for 2021, remember this: prayer and fasting changes things. I am 100% certain that none of the things that I have been able to accomplish would have been accomplished without God. And that’s just that on that….
Let’s be honest, this blog post is all about you. It’s not about me. It’s about your journey. I want to remind you that six figures (and Beyond) is more than possible for you. You have to first see it to believe it. So my homework assignment for you is to write the vision and make it plain. Write clearly what you desire to build and the income you desire to have. Pray over it, work for it, and trust God that it will come into fruition.
