Holiday season is upon us which means we are always looking for gift ideas to celebrate our loved ones and co-workers.
I’ve always been an advocate of supporting Black businesses, but, this year, I’m going out of my way to support Black-Owned Businesses, specifically, Black-Women-Owned businesses when possible.
This article is dedicated to those who are looking for Skin Care and Beauty brands to support this holiday season – and all year long!
In no special order, I’m going to share with you 10 Black-Women-Owned Beauty brands (that I have personally used and purchased), their brands’ story, the founder’s story, what I personally love about their brand, and even my favorite products from them!
The Lip Bar is owned by an inspiring Black Woman, Melissa Butler, who began making lipsticks at home while she worked in Corporate America to challenge the “beauty standard” when she started the brand in 2012.
The Lip Bar is a vegan, cruelty-free makeup brand that you may have seen on the TV Show, Shark Tank. Though The Lip Bar did not walk away from Shark Tank with an investor, they have grown a very well-known brand that you can find in over 450 Target stores across the nation. They started with lipstick and have expanded into many other makeup products.
I love that the Lip Bar challenges beauty norms and encourages bright colors on all skin tones – and their site even shows you what their colors look like on different skin tones. I also love that their products are vegan and cruelty-free.
My favorite items from the Lip Bar are their liquid matte lipsticks in shades “Bawse Lady“, “Curlfriend“, and “Prima Donna“.
Another Black-woman-owned brand, Beauty Bakerie, is owned by Cashmere Nicole who is a faith-based entrepreneur with a powerful story of overcoming breast cancer and thriving as a single mother.
Beauty Bakerie is a makeup brand that has all of your makeup needs and can be found online and in Ulta stores. The brand is colorful, fun, and full of branding that plays on the baked goods theme.
My favorite products from Beauty Bakerie are the matte lip whips which are liquid to matte lipsticks. My favorite Beauty Bakery lip whip shades are “Cranberry Stiletto” which is a deep red and “Gingersnap” which is a neutral burnt orange color.
I love that Beauty Bakerie’s branding and packaging is all around the central theme of a bakery and baked goods. Their products are so cute, colorful, and
Mielle Organics owner, Monique Rodriguez, is an RN turned beauty faith-based CEO. She is a mom and wife who built her brand from the ground up and now runs a global brand that can be found in stores like Target, Walmart, and retailers across the U.S.
I sat down with her virtually in 2019 to hear her full story, and I’ve featured it on the Go-Getter Podcast here. It’s such an inspirational story of how she built her brand from the ground up. Listen to my Go-Getter Podcast episode with Monique Rodriguez, CEO of Mielle Organics here.
Mielle Organics is an organic and natural hair-care & skincare brand that launched in 2014. Mielle Organics has an array of different products from shampoos, conditioners, edge gel, leave-in-conditioners, skincare products, and even hair growth supplements.
First of all, I absolutely love how all the Mielle Organics products smell. I love that the products are formulated for natural hair, especially since my hair is naturally curly/coily.
It’s hard to narrow it down to my favorite products from Mielle Organics, so here are my favorite products and collections:
I haven’t tried Mielle Organics Rice Water collection, but I have heard people rave about them!
I use the Pomegranate & Honey Leave-In-Conditioner as my single-product wash & go, and it leaves my curls defined and still so soft.
Bolden Skin Care is another Black-woman-owned skincare brand. In fact, Bolden Skin Care is owned by two black women – Ndidi Obidoa and Chinelo Chidozie.
Bolden Skincare aims to help women “confidently embrace their natural beauty”. Specifically formulated for women of color, this brand is one to pay attention to.
I love Bolden’s skin care products and how they are natural.
Now, let’s get into my favorite products. I love the Skin Clarifying Cleanser because it’s cleansing and simple, leaving my face fresh and clean. I follow up with the SPF 30 Brightening Moisturizer which is moisturizing without weighing my skin down or making it feel like a film or oil is on my face.
Thank God It’s Natural‘s (TGIN) founder, is another powerful Black woman, Chris-Tia Donaldson who has a phenomenal story of transitioning from corporate law to now being a CEO. She’s a cancer survivor with an extremely inspirational story, as well.
TGIN is a natural hair care brand that has a full line of products you can find online or in your favorite stores like Target, Walgreens, Walmart, CVS & so many more!
I first came across TGIN from a YouTube review as I was looking for a good product to use for twist outs. I found TGIN’s Twist & Define Cream and fell in love.
The products I use most often from TGIN are the Moisture Rich Sulfate Free Shampoo and the Twist & Define Cream. These products are perfect for getting you the perfect twist-out!
Angie Watts is a beauty company owned by another Black woman, Angela Hubbard, who was inspired to use her grandmother’s surname to name her brand. Angie created this skincare line after looking for solutions for her daughter’s eczema which led her to create a skincare line of her own.
Angie Watts is a vegan, plant-based skincare brand aimed at helping to nourish and hydrate your skin. Angie Watts has everything from skin cleanser, face scrubs, body butter, beard care, body oil, and eczema relief products.
I found Angie Watts by searching endlessly on the internet for a face scrub by a black-owned-business. When I came across Angie Watts, the Oshun’s Skin Food, Tumeric + Adzuki Bean Scrub was sold out but I subscribed to be notified when they restocked. As soon as they restocked within days, I purchased and the rest was history.
My skin gets extremely dry once summer ends, and I was looking for a face scrub that would exfoliate and moisturize. That’s exactly what their Oshun’s Skin Food, Tumeric + Adzuki Brean Scrub did. I followed up with their Skin Awakening Cleanser + Toner, which made my face look and feel fresh and soft to the touch.
You can save 15% on their Oshun’s Face scrub at checkout with code “CandaceJ” from 11/28 – 12/2, 2020.
Alicia Carroll is another amazing black woman and founder of Flora’s Angels. Alicia is an Industrial & Design Engineer at heart who created her brand out of her own need for beauty products that would be gentle on her sensitive skin, yet potent enough to keep her skin moisturized throughout the day.
Flora’s Angels is an all-natural handmade skincare company that has a line of several products including body scrubs and a customized line of body butters created from natural ingredients with high absorbency to leave your skin feeling soft, smelling fresh, and keeps you looking and feeling great all day long.
Other than the fact that this brand is Black-woman-owned, I love Flora’s Angels’ body scrubs. They are made from natural ingredients and leave your skin feeling silky to the touch. I love using their body scrub as the final step in my shower routine so that I leave the shower smelling amazing!
Genesis Smith became the CEO of Luxurious Lathers at the age of 22. Her mother started the business after realizing there was a demand for natural soaps. Genesis worked alongside her mother to build the brand while Genesis worked a corporate job and eventually Genesis took over as CEO full-time.
Luxurious Lathers has been a store in a local Chicago-area mall, Orland Mall, for the past 3 years. In 2020, they pivoted to online sales and have been doing great. They have so many options when it comes to products. They offer bath bombs, handmade vegan soaps, lotions, organic skincare, massage oils, body scrubs, and so much more.
I love that Luxurious Lathers is a family business and that Genesis became the CEO at such a young age. I’ve personally tried and fallen in love with their handmade soaps and body scrubs. My favorite soap that I’ve tried is the Almond Goat Milk handmade soap! Not only is it beautiful to look at, it leaves my skin feeling clean and soft!
Chiche Eburu is another Black woman founder who created Juvia’s Place to celebrate the rebels, rulers, and queens of the African kingdoms of long ago. The Nigeria-born entrepreneur, Chiche, started the Juvia’s Palace after she struggled to find makeup to match her deep skin tone. Since 2016 she has been launching makeup products with dark-skinned people in mind, but suitable for all people.
Juvia’s Place is a makeup line that celebrates beauty that is inspired by the vibrancy of Africa. The makeup can be found in Ulta stores and online, and features everything from eyeshadow, foundation, lipstick, and much more. Juvia’s Place has a loyal fan base
I have always been so inspired by Africa, and I love that Juvia’s Place really incorporates the celebration of African culture and beauty across its products and branding.
I first became obsessed with the brand after finding their makeup on Instagram, and I’ll share some of my favorite items from them. I love their eyeshadow palettes, specifically the Warrior and Warrior II is my favorite with neutral tones and sparkle. I also love their Shade Stick which I often use as foundation or concealer.
Loreal Pride is a professional makeup artist and entrepreneur who founded Loreal Pride Beauty after 7 years of working as a professional makeup artist. Loreal created skincare products as a way to find skincare options that were suitable for her sensitive skin.
Loreal Pride Beauty (formerly known as the Beauty Life Brand) is a beauty and skincare company that features vegan lipsticks, mink lashes, and organic skincare. This Hunstville-based company goes beyond Alabama, as their products can be spotted on some of Loreal’s celebrity clients across the US.
I’m a sucker for good lashes, and I love Loreal Pride Beauty’s mink lashes. At first I thought the lashes were going to be “too much” for me, but my favorite lashes have come from this company and look great for extra glam!
