Alright, you may have already seen my blog post that’s all about why email marketing is important. I want to let you know that you should definitely have an email list if you have a business. Even if you’re doing email marketing yourself, you need to know how important it is.
I believe that every business owner needs to be doing email marketing. Email marketing really helps you stay top of mind. I won’t get too much into detail about why I think it’s so important. Just know that it is because I am a digital marketing expert. I want you to utilize email marketing in your business so you can make more money as well.
Email marketing can kind of seem overwhelming when you’re first getting started. But where do you get started when you’re first starting out?
Here’s the major thing: is that you want to build an email list.
An email list is a list of people who have agreed to give you their email address in exchange for either a product, service, or freebie. These may be people who have purchased from you. You have their email addresses and you have gotten permission from them to send them emails.
Email marketing is really great. As a business owner, you may think that you don’t have an email list. But if you sold products, you likely have an email list. You can email people who are interested in what you have to offer because they’ve already bought from you before.
You may have struggled with building an email list. There are many ways to build an email list. If you’re starting from scratch, there are simple ways you can start building an email list. You start with a lead magnet!
A lead magnet or a freebie in marketing is something that’s going to draw your audience in. The goal is to magnetize them in and to give them something in exchange for their email address.
Have you ever been on a website and you’ve seen the little pop-up that’s like, “Save 10% on your first order when you give us your email address”? They’re giving you that incentive of 10% so they can email you more consistently and stay top of mind later. Now, If you’re in retail, that’s a very easy giveaway, right? You’re giving away maybe a 10% or 20% coupon just in exchange for their email address.
But another really great way, other than a coupon, is to offer something for free. This is why a lot of times you’ll see digital products that are like the “free five-day challenge for a Better Booty Bootcamp” or similar.
So if you’re in the fitness space, you could use something like that. Or you could have a free challenge that’s like a live challenge or a live master class.
Here are a few examples of lead magnet and freebie ideas you can use to grow your email list:
If you’re considering hosting a virtual or digital event, be sure to use it to grow your email list. Don’t let your event just be free where people can access using a Zoom link. Instead, send them to a landing page where they can sign up using their email address. Then they’d receive an email that includes the Zoom link to join so you can have their email address after. That way, you can know who signed up and you can communicate with them, right?
You may be wondering what is a landing page? So a landing page is… Voila, here’s an example of my six-figure maven checklist lead magnet landing page.
That is a beautiful landing page I built using ConvertKit. ConvertKit has some of the best lead magnet landing pages.
A landing page basically says, “If you want to learn these several steps, all you have to do is put your name and email in there.”
So when it comes to your email marketing, you want to make sure that you are collecting email addresses, every chance you get. The goal is to collect email addresses so that you can communicate with people. You can do that by setting up a very simple landing page from different email marketing tools and software. I have a blog that’s completely dedicated to email marketing software. So don’t you worry, I got you.
But with email marketing, it’s really important to just get a simple landing page up that you can just say, “Hey, take this free thing in exchange for something of value.”
Now that you have that person’s email address, you will have to set up your landing page appropriately to get all the automation and stuff set up. And it’s usually pretty simple. Most email marketing software makes it super simple for you to set it up where you’re not confused and don’t know what to do.
Email marketing is a really great place to get started regardless of what journey you’re at in business and how long you’ve been in business.
So if you’re a beginner and you’re wanting to build your list, there are so many different things that you can do to grow it, you can do giveaways. But please make sure that if you’re gonna do a giveaway that you give away something that’s related to what you’re going sell or what you’re gonna offer.
For example, if you’re giving away an iPhone, everybody’s going to join the email list because they’re like, oh yes, you’re giving away this iPhone. But if you’re selling plants, that doesn’t really align. So you want to just make sure that your email marketing lead magnet or freebie is in alignment with what you’re going to give them in return in the long-run.
Make sure that you’re going out of your way to be intentional and strategic with your email marketing strategy.
Another huge piece of advice for email marketing: start with some sort of welcome email sequence. This welcome email sequence basically is for when someone signs up for your email list. It’s a series of emails that automatically triggers that your subscriber receives. If they signed up for a freebie or lead magnet, this email often contains what you promised to give them.
Wondering what to include in the welcome email? So maybe it’s a link to a download or private video that you’re sharing with them and then below it, you can explain, who you are and about the brand. You can explain what you do and keep it short and sweet.
Usually, you want to have a sequence of emails so you don’t want to just have one email. It’s kind of like if you meet a new friend, you’re not just going be like “Hi,” and then the next day and be like, “Hey, do you want to go to the amusement park with me?”
In that case, you’d probably think that’s kind of weird. Let’s talk a little bit first and then we can go to the amusement park maybe in three months because we’ve become more friends. At that point, they sort of understand and maybe know you a little bit better. That’s kind of how you want to treat your email marketing.
You want to send a welcome email and you want to say, “Hey, this is who we are, this is what we do.” Then you want to give them a series of emails that kind of share with them resources or things like that that can help them connect with your brand.
If you are just getting started with email marketing, these should be some really great steps to get you on the road to marketing your business online through email marketing. Don’t get overwhelmed but know that this is something you, too, can conquer.
